You’ve probably heard that we’re transitioning our evaporator coils from the traditional copper to a new design that uses an all-aluminum round tube and fin plate design. You probably have a few questions. I'd like to give you some answers.

Why?      First, why are we making this change? Simple. Quality. Our engineers are always working to find ways to raise the bar on product quality and give you an edge over the competition. These coils are another step in that direction.

Formicary corrosion

The problem. Let’s start with a little background. Formicary corrosion has been a major issue for every manufacturer in our industry. It cuts through copper coils in patterns that look like the tunnels in an ant hill.

Common household items.

Our engineers have led the industry in attacking this problem. They discovered that it’s caused primarily by organic acids, like formic acid and acetic acid that come from building materials and common household items—cosmetics, disinfectants, deodorizers, cleaning solvents and vinegar.

The Solution. There’s so much organic acid in most homes that the only realistic solution is to build coils that can stand up to it. Lab testing shows: these new aluminum coils do just that.

Lab Testing. We put these coils through:
     • More than 40,000 cooling cycles.
     • 30 months of accelerated corrosion testing.
     • Burst tests in excess of 2,000 pounds per square inch.
     • More than a quarter of a million fatigue tests on the coils’ transition joints.
     • Acid tests based on a thousand different condensate samples collected from every section of the United States.

Aluminum coil

The Results. In comparison with traditional copper coils, our new aluminum coils are…
     • 14 times more resistant to formic acid solution…
     • 60 times more resistant to bleach solution and…
     • 3.5 times more resistant to a mixed acid solution.
Or… to put it another way…

Our new standard aluminum coils are just as tough as our current top-of-the-line tin-plated copper coils.

What?

Second, what about performance? Can these new aluminum coils measure up to the thermal transfer qualities of traditional copper coils?

Absolutely. These new coils match the performance of traditional copper coils. And, in many cases, aluminum tube hairpins actually provide better cooling efficiency and capacity than similar copper models.

How?

Third, how will the new aluminum coils impact your installation and service procedures? For the most part, they won’t. They’re made in the same factory as always, using some new technologies that weren’t available just a few years ago. They’re the same size as our current copper coils. Same height. Same width. Same depth.

Copper Connections. You’ll still find factory-installed copper connections, so you can braze copper-to-copper when you install one. And, even if you need to field replace a TXV, the procedure is pretty much the same. You’ll still braze copper to copper. About the only difference you’ll notice is that the aluminum coils are lighter so they’re easier to lift and carry.

When?

Finally… when will these new coils be available? Like most products, they’ll be phased into production over several months and… availablility in your specific market will depend on how quickly your distributor depletes the existing inventory of the current copper coils. Here are a couple of tips to help you recognize the new coils.

First, the most obvious change is that the packaging has a blue label.

Second, the eighth digit of the model number will change to an “L” for “aluminum” instead of a “C” for “copper” or a “T” for “tin plated.”

Ask your distributor when these new coils will be available in your area. We think you’ll appreciate the way they give you top-of-the-line performance and quality in a standard coil.
